2009/6/28 Cancer charity fundraisingHi all,
Please help with some fundraising and pass on the website or message to anyone you think might like to help.
I met Ali whilst living in Colchester and we became good friends. We hung out together quite a lot, talked about all sorts of things and she even made me her 'famous' onion soup!!! She's also a bit good on the mandolin too.
MIke and I met briefly and I saw one of his performances. He's an extremely talented story teller.
They both have cancer.
Just over a week ago I learned that Ali has this disease
... again (she already made it through a bout of cervical cancer). Also, her friend Mike Maran, has problems of his own. They decided to get out and try and do something positive whilst currently undergoing treatments and surgery. They're trying to raise 100, 000 GBP for three chosen UK cancer related charities. Please help them out if you can. If you'd rather put into a cancer charity of your own, in your own neck of the woods, I'm sure they'd be all for that too. Ali and Mike are both very nice and very talented people, trying to make something positive. Two very great people. Please copy and paste the flyer and send it too.

2007/11/23 Talking about Why TV Talent Shows Are Killing Pop Music - Music Features | Photos | Biographies | Downloads - MSNInteresting, and quite accurate ... Quote Why TV Talent Shows Are Killing Pop Music - Music Features | Photos | Biographies | Downloads - MSN 2007/10/6 Joel Shawn's new CD "Regine"If you get time please check out the 4 of the 12 songs listed on Joel's MySpace site from his new CD, Regine. It's based upon aspects of the romance between Regine Olsen and Soren Kierkegaard, which took place in Denmark 1837 - 1841. It's a great album with a mix of blues, Americana, folk-rock and folk. Very mellow. Very meaningful and quite hypnotic. If you'd like to purchase a copy please drop me a line here, or contact Joel directly through MySpace messaging.
2007/10/5 Burma - Myanmar: please read this petition.Forwarded to me from Avaaz, via a friend.
"Our emergency petition to stop the crackdown on peaceful protesters in Burma is exploding, with nearly 500,000 signers from every nation of the world. But the situation in Burma remains desperate, with reports of hundreds of monks being massacred and tortured. Burma's rulers have also killed and expelled international journalists, cutting off global media coverage of their cruelty.
China is still the key - the country with the most power to halt the Burmese generals' reign of terror. We're delivering our message this week with a massive ad campaign in major newspapers, beginning Thursday with a full page ad in the Financial Times worldwide, and in the South China Morning Post. The strength of the ad comes from the number of petition signers listed – can we reach our goal of 1 million signatures this week? The link to sign the petition and view the ad is below, forward this email to all your friends and family!
China continues to provide key economic and military support to Burma's dictatorship, but it has been openly critical of the crackdown. Now we need the government to match words with actions. Our ad paints a powerful moment of choice for China in its relationship with the world – will it be a responsible and respected member of the global community, or will it be associated with tyranny and oppression?
People power, on the streets of Burma, and around the world, can triumph over tyranny."

J 2007/9/30 NOVA ... is OVA??Feel sorry for all the recently hired teachers and all the students who were suckered out of their hard earned cash. However, I'm glad to see this bunch of cowboys and crooks going down. For the way they treat people it serves them right.
2007/9/29 NOVA back in the news ....Now NOVA aren't paying people .... I've banged on about NOVA quite a bit in the past, but the more I see in the press about this company the more vindicated I feel about having done so. I'm also glad it's not just me ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddapfbfMm3Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAynTcLiGzs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx6RtvUStEw Something I wrote on a thread on the Japanese mixi diary earlier ... and I stand by it. "I worked for NOVA for almost a year ... a year too long, as far as I'm concerned. They were totally inflexible, uncaring and interested only in bums on seats, sales, whether you were smiling like a buffoon or not, and in the money they made out of the Japanese students. I rate it as one of the most depressing times of my life. It was just a constant downer .... and for the Japanese staff it was even worse; long hours, less pay. They worked so hard and were totally on the front line when it came to customers/students. I can believe they're not paying people, and actually not giving a damn about it much. That's how I perceive NOVA, I'm afraid. They totally lied about several things at the induction day. Even told us that the streets in Japan were totally safe for woman to walk at night. Looking at what happened recently, I think that's the wrong kind of information to be sending young people out here with. I know some people like NOVA and working for them, that's fine. I can only speak from my experience, which was mostly bad. Was so glad when I finally quit, you wouldn't believe. I wouldn't recommend anyone work for that company. If you have a plane ticket, see if you can get a refund and try somewhere/something else. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't touch NOVA with a ten foot barge pole. Actually, I think a few of the English companies in Japan are a bit kookey, from stories that I've heard. The golden days of being an English teacher here are over I reckon. There's a lack of respect for you as a teacher and the constant feeling that the schools prefer a high turnover of teachers and that you're expendable somehow. Maybe it's because so many of the teachers get fed up so quickly that it's not good for business. Roll in the newbies and get them while they're still smiling." 2007/7/27 Rock in the Soviet UnionI recently briefly met Natasha Hull, the owner of Seagull Publishing, on the summer Russian course at Essex University. She's written a pictorial book about her experiences as a photographer in the time of the Soviet Union, and the effect of rock music on the Soviet System. "PER ASPERA AD ASTRA - Through the thorns to the stars. Natasha Hull chronicles and photographs the years of the Russian Underground Rock scene from the 70s and 80s in St Petersburg. Rock music (officially banned by the authorities) became an expression of disent and opposition to the government. This collection of writings and images show the people, attitudes and events behind the official Soviet mask of indestructible power, including some of Russia's greatest rock stars." 2007/6/19 Please send some positive vibes to Stef.Stef Gerhartz is my oldest friend. He's like a brother. No, he is my brother. We go way back. We're a comedy duo. Two halves of a whole. He's also an honorary member of Guru Monkey, a great pianist, artist, songwriter, and he plays the spoons
Over the years he's had several nasty health crises. Recently, he was diagnosed with MS, has had one near fatal brain tumour, which he miraculously survived, removed ... even sidestepping paralysis. In the last 6 months he's been diagnosed with another tumour, and also is having complications caused by the earlier tumour, which turned into a cyst, and also a new cyst which has formed in the brain. All these are in extremely difficult places and the latest tumour is in the middle of the brain and attached to an artery. It's looking to be inoperable. They may be able to treat it with radiation therapy but, all in all, Stef's future is not looking rosey (if he gets through all this there's still the MS, which is a sword of Damacles just hanging there and waiting to take it's slice). He's aware of all of this. obviously. Despite these trials I'd like to keep him feeling positive. I'd also like to keep his wife, Annie, and their children feeling positive too. If you have any positive words or wishes that you'd like to pass on to Stef to give him some strength in this dark and heavy hour, please leave them on this post. Or, just send him some silent thoughts. Also, pause for a thought about how fragile life is (with things like this to deal with on a daily basis, who needs wars, fights, arguments and hatred?) and how we are all just a step away from what Stef is experiencing, and try to enjoy your life, and help others enjoy their lives. Life is tough, but it's also full of beauty. What Stef can teach us is how to appreciate that beauty and all the good things while we still can. Thanks for taking time to read this ... enjoy that sunset, that movie, that music, that book, that walk along the beach. that next cup of coffee, the embraces from the people who love you. Enjoy it all, however simple. J 2007/6/1 New Guru Monkey MySpace PageI've just set up a new MySpace page for the Guru Monkey CD, where you can listen to a few of the songs. 2007/5/12 Mt.Tsukuba painting
This is my most recent painting ... an attempt at a sort of traditional - stroke - manga style of Mt.Tsukuba. The sky didn't quite come out the way I wanted, but it'll do. Maybe I'll have another go in a slightly different style later. Anyway... hope you like it. I'll be getting some original art prints put together and they'll be available for sale (these will be from a print shop, not off the computer). I'll have some in glossy format and some matt, framed and unframed, A4 print size. If you'd like one, please drop me a line or go to my ebay store where they'll be listed in a few days. I'll be selling the original at some point too. Cheers, J
